TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific and Northern Explorer Services - Covid Traffic Light System

The TranzAlpine, Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific schedules are affected due to the Covid Alert . Regretfully the TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific and Northern Explorer services are now cancelled until at least 13 January 2022. Scenic trains will not be operating as we are unable to provide the service experience we seek to deliver under the present Covid Traffic Light Settings. Unfortuneately, we can't provide our customers with total certainty at this time when services will resume and we appreciate this may be affecting your travel plans. We will advise updates on our websites as soon as a decision has been made on resuming services.

Face masks are now mandatory on all journeys, except when consuming food or drink.

Cook Strait ferry bookings and some daytours and bus routes are also open for sale. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries on 0800 143 669 or info@newzealandtravelteam.com

We understand that Covid-19 continues to add uncertainty in planning. Should there be cancellation of services due to Covid 19 restrictions, we will offer affected customers a transfer to an alternative date, a credit for 12 months, or a refund, regardless of the fare purchased less a $30 processing fee for the entire reservation.

About the journey

Welcome aboard the Taieri Gorge Railway

One of the world's great train trips - an experience not be missed.

Taieri Gorge Railway offers a scenic train trip into the spectacular Central Otago Hinterland and up the ruggest Otago Coast north of Dunedin.  The Taieri Gorge Railway offers unique and panoramic views over ever-changing scenery. There are opportunities for photos where the train either slows down or stops for you to disembark. There is a licenced Café and bar on board and live commentary on all trips.

Dunedin to Middlemarch or vice versa One Way Journey

Dunedin - Middlemarch - Dunedin Return Journey

Once a week in Summer (Some exceptions due to Cruise Ship visits, October to April) and once a week in Winter (May to September) the train extends its journey to the very end of the railway line to Middlemarch, a lovely example of a country railway town and the beginning of the Otago Central Rail Trail.

Dunedin to Pukerangi or vice versa One Way Journey

Dunedin - Pukerangi - Dunedin Return Journey

The train runs daily to Pukerangi, a peaceful outcrop out the other side of the Taieri Gorge. If you are worried that you will not see all the scenery on this trip then don’t; this tour allows you see all the best bits the trip has to offer. This trip will take four hours and is our most popular tour!
