Latest update regarding the Coastal Pacific & the TranzAlpine

TRANZALPINE UPDATE

The Midland train line between Christchurch and Greymouth is out of action following a 300ha fire in a remote part of the South Island.

The TranzAlpine is now scheduled to resume services on 22 March , 2017

Full refunds are being offered as well as replacement bus services which if accepted you will receive a 50% refund off your fare paid.

BUS REPLACEMENTS

As the road was not damaged, bus replacements are available for affected passengers. This bus will depart from the Christchurch and Greymouth Railway Stations on the same timetable as TranzAlpine currently operates.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

  • Full refunds will be offered to all affected passengers who chose to cancel and make their own arrangements.
  • A 50% refund will be offered for those that choose to travel on the bus replacement.

COASTAL PACIFIC UPDATE

Work is continuing at pace on the reinstatement of the Main North Line following November’s Kaikoura earthquake. Parts of the line are open for freight goods and crews are working fast in both directions but higher safety standards and ongoing seismic events mean that passenger services will be delayed longer than freight. Because of this, it is unlikely that the Coastal Pacific will operate this summer season (September 2017-April 2018).

The Coastal Pacific will be back to service as early as possible for the 2018/2019 season and it is hoped the season will be extended if possible. This could mean an earlier start date than September 2018. We will continue to keep you updated as a return to service date becomes clearer. In the meantime we can book coach transportation for you between Picton and Christchurch.

Local Trains

Auckland suburban train services
For fare and timetable information please phone Auckland Transport on 0800-103-080 tollfree in the Auckland region only or click for online train timetables and fares on the Western, Southern, Eastern, Onehunga and Manukau lines only.

There are no regular commuter passenger train services from Auckland to Hamilton. The Northerner Explorer train provides one service between Auckland and Hamilton.

Wellington suburban train services
For fare and timetable information please phone Metlink on 0800-801-700 tollfree in New Zealand or click for online train timetables and fares on the Capital Connection and the Wairarapa Connection operating from Wellington. The Capital Connection and the Wairarapa Connection are commuter train services, so reservations are not required.

Tickets for these trains are available from the Tranz Metro ticket office - Wellington Railway Station, Masterton Railway Station, Featherston Railway Station and Palmerston North Railway Station or from the respective Train Manager's on the day of travel.
