The Overlander
The Overlander train is a rail journey through the heart of the North Island travelling between Auckland, New Zealand's largest city and home of the Sky Tower, through 5 unique scenic regions of the North Island to Wellington, New Zealand's arts and culture capital.

Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges – all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views.
All carriages are centrally heated/air conditioned, with 'Airline' style reclining seats, with large panoramic windows giving sweeping views of the magnificent North Island.
The Buffet Carriage has a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks and light meals.
The Observation Carriage includes a mix of seating including lounge style seating. The lounge style seating is arranged at the very rear of this glass backed carriage enabling you to enjoy a totally unique Overlander experience.
The Overlander train is a reserved seating 'One Class/Non-smoking' service.
The nearest railway station to Auckland International Airport to board The Overlander train is Middlemore Railway Station approximately 15-20 minutes by taxi/shuttle bus. The cost of the taxi or shuttle bus is additional to The Overlander train fare.
'Steam Saturdays' - the experience of past
A fully restored operational WAB mainline steam engine will pull the scheduled Overlander train service between Feilding and Taihape and return every second Saturday, making day trips possible out of Wellington and Palmerston North for the whole family to enjoy a truly unique experience. At Taihape, you can get off the train and watch the steam engine being turned – a great opportunity for photos!
The Overlander train 'Steam Sundays' is available from June to September.
